About Anita Bean
Award-winning Registered Nutritionist, author, and former British Bodybuilding Champion
My passion for nutrition began with a simple love of food. I was brought up on a vegetarian diet and, as a child, I remember helping my parents grow and harvest apples, cherries, sweetcorn, blackcurrants, peas, beans and potatoes from the garden then turn them into delicous dishes in the kitchen. I devoured every vegetarian recipe book I could find and, later, started devising my own recipes. That curiosity around food led me to study Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Surrey, where I also discovered a new passion: bodybuilding. In the 1980s, it was unusual to see women lifting weights, but I was hooked. Combining my academic knowledge with sport, I trained for nearly a decade and went on to win the title of British Bodybuilding Champion in 1991.
After gaining experience in the NHS and at the Dairy Council, I founded my own nutrition consultancy in 1990, specialising in sports and exercise nutrition and health writing. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with the British Olympic Association, London Marathon, Swim England, RideLondon, as well as athletes, teams, and organisations across disciplines from swimming and cycling to endurance running.
My mission is to make nutrition accessible, evidence-based, and practical. Through my books, articles, and speaking engagements, I help people to fuel their performance, health, and wellbeing through healthy, sustainable food choices.
What sets my work apart is my ability to translate complex nutrition science into clear, actionable advice. I’ve written over 30 books on nutrition and fitness, including the best-selling The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition - first published in 1993 and now in its 9th edition - widely used as a key reference on many sports nutrition courses.
Recent titles, such as The Vegan Athlete’s Cookbook, The Vegetarian Athlete’s Cookbook, and The Runner’s Cookbook, help active individuals fuel their performance with confidence, clarity, and great-tasting food.
Outside of work, I stay active through cycling, strength training, yoga, and walking. I’m also a proud mum to two daughters who have both competed at national level in swimming, and who continue to inspire me every day.
You’ll find that same passion and practicality throughout my books and writing, helping you make sense of nutrition and get the best from your body.
